| HIGHLANDER DRIVEIN REUNION |
Where did you hang out in the 50's and 60's? When we were in High School in Wichita Kansas back
in the 50's and 60's, we had a very special drive-in called the Highlander. It was located on the East
edge of town on the corner of Edgemoor and Central. So from 1953 to 1963, it was a meeting place
for the teens with cars to hang out.
Most boys then were car crazy! They would work on their cars to make them go fast and look weird!
Like chopping a top! Or lowering it almost to the ground! Doing things to the engines to make it go
faster! Then they would bring it to the Highlander to not only show it off, but to race other cars! They
started car clubs! Most car clubs were from a certain area of town! Like the Strip Saints were mostly
south enders. We had many car clubs! Continentals, The Smokers, Jesters, and many more!
Wichita was and still is a car town! We all got older but we still love our cars!
And now the "girls" of the Highlander! HEY! We are talking Pony Tails, Fuzzy Sweaters, Tight fitting
jeans! Oh yeah! The Highlander was also romance, not only with cars, but yes the ladies too! It was a
place that girls could meet the boys, and boys could meet the girls! But mostly cars ruled at the
Highlander!! We would go out to Rock Road where we had marked off a quarter mile drag strip! The
girls would flag the boys off at the starting line. A lot of first kisses happened at that strip!
The question was when leaving the Highlander to go race, was who you were riding with?
Sometimes their would be 6 to 8 teens crammed into one car! Girls on boys laps, and packed in like
sardines! Their was always a caravan to the race! Then back to the Highlander for a coke! There were
other drive ins in Wichita. The Continental Telatray, The Town and Country, better known as the T & C,
or the "Circle Jerk". And then Bowers out east next to the Rose Bowl bowling alley. But the Highlander
was the Hot Rodders delight! So if you ever came to the Highlander back in the Happy Days? Give us
a call! We have a reunion every April to show our cars and reminisce! We have a car show, dinner
